Leicester Mercury

Hello, Leicester! Doesn’t quite have the same ring as hello, Wembley! does it? Sam Avery dreamed of Wembley and got closer than most, writes Sian Brewis.

And in a painfully funny hour, we found out how the lad from Liverpool went from dreamer to almost-nearly-made-it with his heavy metal band, DBH.

Peppered with funny one-liners and easily able to hold your attention for an hour – no mean feat – this was an underdog’s story to cheer for.

As a teenager, a heady combination of hearing Nevermind by Nirvana and reading David Lee Roth’s autobiography made him think life as a rock ‘n’ roll star was the best job in the world.

“Who’s heard of David Lee Roth?” he asks – a few hadn’t – before reading out a few choice moments from the book.

There were no willing groupies for his band, only weird lads that wrote the band’s name on pen on their forehead.

The story of their last gig, at Brixton Academy, when they turned the crowd round from jeers to cheers – only to find the reviewer had gone home after the first song – was brilliantly told but you genuinely felt gutted for them.

He could have become bitter, but he’s not. He’s hilarious.
