Commissioner is a waste of cash

I agree wholeheartedly with Gordon Duncan and R Taylor ("Still none the wiser as to why we need crime commissioner", Mailbox, Saturday, October 20) on why we even need this position to be filled, but as that has been decided, I wonder why it is necessary that the candidate is elected by members of the public at our expense.

Surely in the current climate, the money spent on this poll could have been put to a far more worthwhile project (more men on the beat, as R Taylor suggested).

I would very much like to know the total cost (salary apart) of this exercise!

Advertising, website, printing of poll cards/ballot papers, organisation and staffing of the polling stations and many other associated costs. Every time I hear the advert on the radio, I find myself asking why.

Sylvia Orr, Whetstone.

Reference your article on pantomimes, page seven of Friday's Leicester Mercury.

How dare you say that it is the first Christmas pantomime to be in the city for 20 years. What do you think The Little Theatre has been producing each year for as long as I can remember? Come on, get your facts right.

Aileen Orme, Leicester.

I see that my MP, Keith Vaz, has been flying the flag for the diabetes battle in Mumbai. Why?

The first duty of a Member of Parliament is to his constituents. Mr Vaz, a type 2 diabetic like myself, would have better spent his time in Leicester East encouraging his constituents to get themselves checked before non-constituents.

John Burrows, Humberstone.

Where is the talent? Thatcher had Heseltine, Clarke, Howe and a host of talented people. I did not like their politics but they were competent. Cameron's front bench has Gove, Schapps, May and Pickles.

Surely there must be some talent on the Tory back benches that can save this Government's reputation?

Eric Goodyer, Colsterworth.

“And where is the talent on the Labour front bench, Eric ?”
