Preparations are beginning to open up a quarry to the public.

Lafarge Aggregates & Concrete UK wants to have open days at Mountsorrel granite quarry to show people how it operates.

The quarry produces about five million tonnes of pink granite a year for buildings and road construction, sea defences and railway track ballast.

The open days are being held from Saturday, May 5, to Sunday, May 13, will include tours and allow visitors to meet staff and learn about plans.

The last open day, held over seven years ago and attracted 4,000 people.

Quarry manager Angus Shedden said: "Although the open days are still six months off, there is a lot of organising to do and we want to make sure that everything goes to plan.

"To ensure everyone who wants to visit can, admission will be by ticket only and people can start applying in December.

"Our neighbours will have the chance to come and see a modern, working quarry in action and talk to us about Mountsorrel's rich community heritage, it's place in the history of Charnwood Borough and, looking forward, about exciting plans for the future."
