A man who hurt his back in two separate workplace incidents has received £7,000 in compensation.

David Ogden, 54, from Melton, first hurt his back while lifting heavy trays when working for Kettleby Foods, in Melton.

The nine kilogram trays were stacked in an awkward position in metal cages and Mr Ogden felt his back "go'' as he was pulling them towards him.

He had to take several weeks off work and on his return was then assigned to light duties.

A few months later, his back condition was aggravated again when he was lifting a 25 kilogram bag of tortilla wraps. He decided to leave his job six months later and find less physical work after he was left with long-term back problems.

A consult said Mr Ogden had pre-existing degenerative changes in his back aggravated by the incidents.

Kettleby Foods settled the claim out of court for £7,000.

Mr Ogden, now an internal auditor for the Highways Agency, said: "I decided to pursue compensation because my back will never fully recover. I am always going to suffer pain and it will get worse as I get older."

A spokesperson for Kettleby Foods said: "Kettleby Foods takes health and safety matters extremely seriously and has a very good record for ensuring the health and safety of its employees. It is not our policy to discuss individual cases."
