A concrete crushing machine fell from a lorry, knocking over a lamp-post which hit two parked cars in Aylestone Road, Leicester, just before lunchtime today. The incident, at the junction with Lothair Road at 11.36am, caused major traffic hold-ups in the area. Leicestershire Police said: "Luckily, there were no injuries."

The hold-ups were likely to continue while the machine and lorry were removed.

“It's easy to say keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front, the vehicle may also have pulled out from Lothair road.....none of us was there to judge nor assume whether or not this was the case.I am also an HGV driver and biker.
The chains securing the load do get checked and should be stamped with there rating.Even new ones will stretch under duress, bit like us humans.I am not standing up for the driver ( I am not keen on a majority of HGV drivers myself even though I've been driving the poxy things for over 2o years) but lets not make judgement when all most have to go on is what we have heard is second hand......never judge a book by the cover ;)”

“"Keeping a safe distance from the vehicle in front!" is always advisable as is driving according and cir-***stance.
It begs believe however that either the "lamp-post" or "parked cars" could be guilty of driving to close. It would also seem unlikely that poor road maintenance was a factor. The foreseeable g-forces generated through normal modern-day driving with such loads, would be far more than poor road maintenance would generate, unless the surface collapsed under the vehicle. Much more likely to be the use of an unsuitable vehicle or equipment, a mechanical fault, failure of securing method used or driver error. As this incident could easily have left a number of people dead or severely injured ones can only hope a full and open investigation is carried out and any negligence is severely dealt with. The financial cost to the economy of work related incidents is staggering and the cost in lives and injuries sustained tragic for the individuals concerned.
The HSE states "Workplace injuries and ill health (excluding cancer) cost society an estimated £13.4 bil-lion in 2010/11", yet the government is adamantly devoted to cutting health and safety regulations and enforcement. Compare this to the blunt draconian new measures the government as introduced to control, what it likes to term as benefit fraud that, according to the DWP's official estimates totalled £1.2bn over the year. Whilst no would deny that fraudster must be dealt with but so must those that risk causing death and injury and leave others to pick up the pieces.”

    “Simples.......

Keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front!

If this had happened on a busy motorway it could have been disastrous!”

“Similar instance of loads falling of lorries are far to common and to often cause serious injury and death. Yet we have a government hell-bent on ditching regulations and enforcement even though it maintains it's the party of law and order. Seems to me the only law and order they care about is that protects their wealth, salaries, expenses and other ill gotten gains. The rest of us (their constituents can go to hell because they clearly don't care.”

“I assume this was caused by the poor road maintenance on this stretch of Aylestone Road”
