I was not impressed by Piaf, at Curve – in fact I found it boringly distasteful.

There was no story to it, as there was with wonderful Educating Rita.

I thought Curve were blatantly disgusting and vulgar for putting it on – so much so it is putting me off going to theatre altogether.

It used to be left to people's imagination what went on behind closed doors. It used to also be said that if a comedian resorted to swearing and innuendo of any kind they were considered not to be a comedian for lack of good material. Well, could the same be said of you?

For a leading person (I will not call her a lady) to do what she did on stage leaves you thinking what sort of morals she has.

To be fair, the music was enjoyable and for her to remember all those songs was astonishing.

I am sure she must be an excellent actress but she needs to use her talents in a better way.

Someone asked my husband and I to go with her to see a play about rags to riches, so we didn't look into the content, thinking she knew all about it.

But unfortunately she hadn't got the full story.

Barbara Johnson, Leicester.

“How can a play be boring and then engender such a vitriolic response from the letter writer? By all means be shocked by the contents but do not say it is boring”

“If you don't bother reading up on the play that you pay for tickets to see, then fair enough - accept that its nobodies fault but your own, and try to leave without disturbing anyone else.

But to sit all the way through it, and then write a letter to your local paper complaining about it? And complaining about such trite points too - what century was it that actresses used to get branded as immoral? I seem to remember that Shakepeare's work was originally performed by all male casts for this reason - although a dare say the letter writer here would be offended by a man dressed as a woman too...”

“It would seem that Barbara Johnson misses the point about an important aspect of theatre and dramatic art in general and that is it can be a fictional representation of real events. Piaf was a tortured artist with a highly troubled personal life that was open to public scrutiny. I challenge anyone to present that dramatically without touching on issues that some (like Barbara Johnson) find uncomfortable. The fact that Curve has had to extend the run of Pam Gems award-winning play suggests that your correspondent is in a minority and I would respectfully suggest that to avoid her further embarrassment she next time contacts the theatre in advance of booking tickets to ensure that productions do not contain material that will affect her sensibilities.”
