County councillors will ask developers of the HS2 rail line to reconsider part of the plan.

Leicestershire County Council has agreed to raise concerns with the Government and MPs about the line, which will cut through north west Leicestershire.

Council leader Nick Rushton is concerned about the effect it would have on homes, businesses and potential developments along the route, which shows HS2 re-emerging from a tunnel under East Midlands Airport into the middle of a site earmarked by developer Roxhill as a rail freight depot.

Roxhill would create 6,000 jobs and secure millions of pounds for road improvement projects in the area, and Coun Rushton expressed concerns about job losses.

Councillors from all three parties backed a motion to "actively engage" with HS2 Ltd to "obtain the best possible outcome for Leicestershire".

Councillor Rushton said: "The blight on homes, businesses and development is horrendous and the station at Toton is in completely the wrong place for us – it would be much better in Derby."
