I would like to say to all the irrational fox-hating Mercury readers: What planet are you living on?

One incident involving a fox and people seem to be living in fear for their lives.

So before people get hysterical, like it seems the grandmother of John M Cox (Mercury, June 15) is – as he claims "she will no longer sit in the garden as she fears she will be eaten" – let's get things into perspective.

With the number of foxes living in this country, the odd incident involving these animals over the years is hardly anything to worry about.

These "critters", as Mr Cox calls them, are part of British nature, just like crocodiles are to parts of America and Australia – never mind the bears, deadly spiders and other deadly creatures they have.

And here we are in Britain, frightened and fearing for our lives, because of a mere little fox.

I don't know about anyone else, but I'm more afraid of the two-legged "critters" that roam our towns.

They are the ones Mr Cox's grandmother should be afraid of.

How many of them hurt and kill people every day? Should they all be culled?

So before all you fox-haters start praying for a mass cull, try to remember the lines from the song:

All things bright and beautiful,/ all creatures great and small,/ all things wise and wonderful,/ the Lord God made them all.

T Clifford, Glenfield.

“Well said T Clifford - its amazing how in this country some people believe everything they read, especially if it makes headlines in 'The Sun', then the pack mentality kicks in and the example of a mass cull on foxes.

Experts everywhere agree this was an isolated and extremely rare instance and it is certainly not clear whether the fox actually intended to bite.

We are supposed to be a civilised and intelligent society but we are not - just intent on persecution of one animal. Does that mean we ought to also bring back capital pinishment for murder? I think not.

    Shame on the human race!”

“Whilst we're getting things into perspective just how many foxes were killed by the hunts - ah, yes, I thought so, very few.”
