Culture mix that nobody can match
The full line-up of contenders for the title of UK City of Culture has been revealed and we can now see the competition which Leicester faces. All have strong claims. The south coast cities of Portsmouth and Southampton, for instance, have a rich maritime heritage. The former is home to a historic dockyard which includes a naval museum, Nelson's flagship HMS Victory, the remains of the Mary Rose, and the ironclad warship HMS Warrior. Another contender, Plymouth, is similarly steeped in naval history.
Aberdeen is also a fascinating city. Its maritime museum charts its nautical history from the days of sail through to modern-day oil and gas exploration. It is also has an impressive art gallery and hosts many events and festivals.
This is clearly going to be a tough competition.
However, we remain confident that Leicester can win this title.

One of our city's greatest strengths is its rich variety of cultures which is reflected in many different festivals and other events. The extent of this diversity is unique among the contenders.
As Curve theatre chief executive Fiona Allan says in our report today, Leicester reflects a modern cosmopolitan country, while also having a rich and fascinating history.
This blend of old and new, as we have said before in this column, is a potentially winning combination.
We have the greatest respect for all the contenders but we think that Leicester has something to offer that nobody else can match.
These are worrying times for Leicester City. The team have picked up only one win in the past seven games and scraped a draw against Leeds on Tuesday night in the last minute of injury time.
However, let's focus on the positives. They are in the play-off places. They have some highly talented players. And they showed great tenacity and resolve to get that leveller against Leeds.
They just need more composure in front of goal and a little more confidence in general.
Keep the faith. Come on City.

“Rich variety of cultures doesn't necessarily mean a rich culture. This 'talking point' is an assumption that multiculturalism is a good thing and not a symptom of cultural failure.”

“By culture does it mean a city divided by areas of people of different nationalties. Will someone tell me what we have to offer to attract people to the city unless they like empty shops and dirty streets and attractions that the Mayor has closed because of lack of money”
