Leicestershire cyclo-cross riders Dave Collins and Charlotte Broughton should be in good heart for the third round of the National Trophy this weekend.

Both turned in strong performances in their most recent rides a week before they head to Southampton for the midway point of the Trophy.

Collins took third place in the Inter-Area team championship at Milton Keynes Bowl.

Victory went to Lee Williams from the Welsh squad, but the team medals went to Yorkshire as they placed two riders in the top five. Collins had been second going into the final lap but was overtaken by London's Harry Franklin.

Even so, Collins' performance helped the East Midlands take the bronze medal.

County colleague Dan Booth, who also rides for the Hope Factory team, is due to ride alongside Collins at Southampton. He currently sits 17th in the overall standings, with Collins 25th.

However, with four races remaining in the six-race series, both have the ability and experience to improve considerably.

Broughton, who won the under-14 Trophy last season, tackled a Lincolnshire League cross fixture at Woodhall Spa and, despite a less than favourable position on the grid, the 14-year-old multi-national champion came through the test strongly.

Racing for the MG Décor Team Carbon Bikes set-up, the Countesthorpe girl took less than a lap to make contact with the leading group in the youth race and went on to finish sixth overall and first girl – half a lap ahead of her closest rival.

This year, she has moved up to under-16 level and is unlikely to repeat her Trophy success, having missed the second round at Ipswich.

She currently lies in 10th place overall.

Cosby's all-rounder Grace Garner will also be in Southampton, racing in RST-Trigon colours.

In the veteran categories, Welland Valley Wheelers' stalwart Vic Barnett tackles the over-50s event.
