Police said the van failed to stop at the scene of the collision, which happened near Shearsby Bath restaurant, in Bruntingthorpe Lane, at 2pm.

Detective Constable Seamus Burns is investigating the incident, he said: “The cyclist was travelling towards Bruntingthorpe Airfield when he was struck from behind by a van travelling in the same direction.

“From enquiries we’ve conducted so far we’ve located a van believed to have been involved in the collision however we would still like to trace the drivers of other vehicles which we believe were in the vicinity of the cyclist at the time of the incident."

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Det Con Seamus Burns on 101.
