Death-crash motorist 'was over B-test limit'
A speeding motorist who was two-and-a-half times the legal drink-drive limit died after hitting a car which crossed his path, an inquest heard.
Ricky Singh-Kler's Citroen Saxo then spun into the path of an oncoming vehicle, which ploughed into the Saxo's side sending it crashing into a bus stop.
Mr Singh-Kler, 20, from Thurnby Lodge, in Leicester, died from the multiple injuries he suffered in the accident.
The crash happened at about 10.20pm on May 5, 2007, in Scraptoft Lane, in Leicester.
Crash investigators told an inquest at Leicester's Town Hall yesterday that Mr Singh-Kler had been driving at a "minimum" of 67mph when the first collision occurred.
He had been driving in a 30mph zone at the time, near to the staggered junction with Peters Drive and Stanley Drive.
Witnesses told the hearing that a Toyota Corolla pulled out of Peters Drive, and was turning left into Stanley Drive when it collided with Mr Singh-Kler's Saxo.
The Saxo then spun into the path of an on-coming Nissan Micra which hit it, sending it spinning into the bus stop.
The force of the second collision threw Mr Singh-Kler half out of the passenger side window. He had not been wearing a seatbelt.
The inquest heard that the driver of the Toyota, Vena Raja, failed to stop at the scene and continued home.
She told the inquest she did not realise the Saxo car had hit her.
She spoke to police later when she saw the damage to her car.
Mrs Raja told the hearing that after looking both ways at the junction of Peters Drive and Scraptoft Lane, she "decided it was safe" to pull out.
Accident investigator Pc Jim Lawrence said the driver would have had a clear view of any vehicles within 400 metres as they waited in Peters Drive. He said: "The evidence clearly shows that the Citroen Saxo was there to be seen and, in my opinion, the damage to the Toyota was substantial enough for the driver to be aware of the incident."
Mr Singh-Kler's blood/alcohol level was 205mg of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood – the legal limit is 80mg.
Coroner Martin Gotheridge recorded a verdict of accidental death.
He said: "Was it safe for the Toyota to cross when it did? It would appear that Mr Singh-Kler's vehicle would have been visible to someone stopped at the mouth of Peters Drive, but it is not for me to apportion blame."
Mr Singh-Kler's family declined to speak after the inquest.
