A lorry crashed through the central reservation of the M1 yesterday, causing tailbacks of up to eight miles.

The collision, to the north of Leicester, shut the outside lanes of both the north and south carriageways throughout the morning. The motorway was completely shut southbound for a time.

The driver of the lorry was not injured in the crash, which happened between junctions 21A and 22 just before 8am.

A Highways Agency spokesman said: "The central reservation was damaged as a result of the incident and traffic movement was about 40 minutes slower through the area on the southbound carriageway and about 20 minutes slower on the northbound.
