Delays for drivers on M1 in Leicestershire after vehicle fire
Drivers in Leicestershire have faced traffic chaos and delays after two separate incidents on roads in the county.
A vehicle fire on the M1 and an overturned lorry on the A46 has led to major disruption and delays continue as recovery operations are carried out.
The motorway was closed in both directions for about an hour after the fire at about 11.45am on the northbound carriageway near to junction 21.
The southbound carriageway has reopened, but two northbound lanes, from junction 21 to 22, remain closed. Normal traffic conditions are expected from 10pm.

Police said only one vehicle, the lorry, was involved in the incident and no-one was injured.
There is also queuing traffic on the the M1 southbound between the A50 and M69.
Drivers are also being warned of continuing delays on the M69 northbound between junction one and the M1. Delays of up to 50 minutes are expected.
Police are urging commuters to use a different route if possible and are also asking motorists on the road to drive safely and not to slow down or stop near the incident.
Earlier today an overturned vehicle caused delays on the A46 in Anstey, Leicestershire.

“foxontherun73,
I noticed the trailer remains and the lack of tractor unit because of my vantage point in my cab, high above the traffic. From this position, I can see everything around me clearly at 56mph. The tractor unit had obviously been recovered from the scene and I was glad to hear that the driver was ok. On this occasion, I was in a queue past the scene but would have passed without slowing had I had the option to do so.
For the record, I do not "rubber neck", ever.
So you know what you can do with your black kettle and pot and your smug comment.”

“I also travelled south thru this scene and it was definitely not rubberneckers causing the southbound delays, The congestion continued after the accident scene including the slipway of, If you read the article both North and southbound carrigeways were closed, cannot inderstand why.”

“@ foxontherun73; that's rather harsh criticism of taylorma66; the morbid curiosity that makes people slow down and be so distracted by an incident that leads them to almost cause another collision is a completely different situation to one of having current spatial awareness of your surroundings, the environment, other drivers and the conditions in which you're travelling isn't it? (at least I hope ALL those controlling vehicles around me have the latter)...”

“I got caught up in the A46, M1, and ring road issues today (an accident on each). Every time I took a different route...............more traffic jams!”

“So you rubber necked yourself taylorma66 if you made out the remains and couldn't see the tractor unit.
Pot, kettle, black.”

“Just spent 3 hours on the M69 to travel 4.5 miles!! Not a traffic cop in sight to control the congestion on the island at the end of M69 even though they had closed the slip road to the M1 thus prolonging the delay. Where are the boys in blue when you need them???”

“Glad to "hear" the driver is ok, should I say.”

“I was just about to get on to the M1 northbound at junction 21 around midday. Approaching from Fosse Park I could see huge flames and plumes of black smoke as well as traffic standing still on the elevated carriageway.
I decided to avoid the scene and headed back to the ring road and onwards to Coalville via the A50. Coming back south a couple of hours later I got stuck in a queue caused by the inevitable "rubber kneckers". (Why do people do this?) Passing the scene I could see the burnt out remains of a double deck HGV trailer although there was no sign of the tractor unit. Glad to here the driver is ok and no one was injured.
I came back northbound a couple of hours ago (around 4ish) and the congestion had eased considerably although the wreck was still being recovered.”
