Drivers across Leicestershire faced delays this morning as strong winds returned after yesterday’s calmer conditions.

Several roads in the county were affected by fallen trees and debris.

A fallen tree closed part of the A6006 Far Street, in Wymeswold, earlier this morning. The route has now re-opened. There was also a partial blockage of the A6003 Ayston Road, in Uppingham, at the A47 junction, because of a fallen tree. The route has now been cleared.

A lorry and a car collided on the A47 between Skeffington and Tugby at around 7.30am, as heavy rain reduced visibility. The fire service attended to clear the road, while ambulance crews accessed the drivers of both vehicles. Their condition is not yet known.

Fire crews were also called out to a house in Earl Russell Street, in Aylestone, Leicester, just after midnight to secure an unstable chimney. Hours later they removed unstable glass from a block of flats in Stoneygate Road, Stoneygate, Leicester, after residents feared it would be blown in.

Police are warning drivers to take care when using the county’s roads.

Two markets in the county have been hit by the severe weather.

Charnwood Borough Council said Loughborough town centre will hold a limited market today due to severe winds. Some traders will be selling perishable goods from their vehicles.

Organisers of Leicester’s Farmers’ Market have also been forced to cancel today’s event because of the bad weather.
