The design brief given to architects regarding the Richard III memorial has been revealed by Leicester Cathedral.

The 16-page document tells designers how the Cathedral would like the monument to look and function.

  1. White roses left at Richard III King of England's memorial stone which is currently at Leicester Cathedral.

The Cathedral has already said that it would prefer a ledger stone to be placed in the chancel (or choir) of the building, which rules out the £30,000 limestone tomb offered by the Richard III Society.

The brief says: “While other forms of grave, tomb or memorial cannot be ruled out prior to consultation, it is unlikely that a large table top tomb or effigy would be acceptable to the Chapter or Cathedrals Fabric Commission of England (CFCE).”

Speaking today, Acting-Dean Rev Barry Naylor said: “We feel that we are really honouring him with a ledger stone, we don’t think this is disrespectful at all.

“One of the best known and most respected memorials in the country - the Unknown Warrior at Westminster - is visited by thousands and is the focal point of Remembrance Day, and I don’t think anyone would say that was disrespectful.”

The alterations to the Cathedral when installing the monument will have to be agreed with the Cathedrals Fabric Commission of England.

The final design, chosen by the Cathedral Chapter, will be submitted to the CFCE for approval.

“I do not like the idea of a pancake stone that people can walk all over. Fine for hundreds of poets in Westminster Abbey, but disappointing for a king in Leicester, especially one that has resided over a pancake carpark for over 500 years.

Bring back the casket idea. Who is going to travel to view a burnt pancake on the floor?”

“A king should have a tomb and I'm sure York Minister would give him one if they had the chance. Also after all the hype it would be a total anticlimax not to.”

“If Leicester Cathedral ripped of the public like York Cathedral does they would have lots of room to put a tomb too, but thankfully Leicester Cathedral does not rip of its Citizens”

“How much did the Cathedral pay towards finding the king???? They seem to have the say in what they want and the cost. He was King of England like it or lump it. Give him a nice place of rest. Cannot please everyone.”

“I agree whole heartily with little Steve, we NEED to give him a royal burial with an appropate tomb, come on Leicester lets pull together and get this done, I for one don't want him to go to York, and to put a comparison off a king to the unnamed solider, ( not taking any thing away from the unnamed solider) is not right, come on do the right thing , by sue”

“Yes, Rachel_Leics, the memorial slab does look lovely - and has done for the thirty years since it was installed by the Richard III Society - especially when it's adorned with the white roses of York as in this photo. But now that King Richard's remains have been found, wouldn't it be nice to have it replaced with something more fitting for an anointed king of England - a tomb perhaps? It wouldn't even have to be paid for by the Cathedral or the city of Leicester as the Society have raised a substantial amount from member donations. If Leicester Cathedral doesn't have space for a fitting memorial, York Minster does... The slab in Leicester could continue to record where the king fell in battle as now, while his remains would be re-interred where he could be more appropriately commemorated.”

“Would the cfce make more of an effort if it was our current queen who was being buried in Leicester cathedral , I know she would never be buried here but you can see my point. Why don't they just hand him over to York so they can give him the burial fit for a king that they want to deny the people of Leicester doing.”

“If you can't give him a decent tomb then for god's sake hand the remains over to a proper cathedral that can.”

“He wasnt a poet or artist he was a ENGLISH KING!!!!!! he should have a tomb and effigy, and if Leicster Cathedral cant do this then why were they arguing for his remains!!!!! was Henry VII given a slab!!!!!! send him to York where they would give him the Honours he deserves, not some slab, like a blue plaque in London, I am a historian and studied in depth the Wars of the Roses, whether you agree or disagree about his life HE WAS STILL A ENGLISH KING!!!!!!!! give him some dignity, after 500 odd years of some ignominous burial and ending up in a car park, still cannot believe that an ENGLISH CATHEDRAL WOULD DO THIS!!!!!!

    HISTORIAN STEVE”
