Disgraceful waste of council's time and resources
Well done to Father Daly for having his parking ticket cancelled after the council saw fit to spend £450 of taxpayers' money in an unsuccessful attempt to recover £30.
I also experienced this last year. I parked outside my son's house. He has a resident's parking permit costing £25 per annum and a free visitor's parking card for use in the ticket machine for two hours' free parking. However, on this occasion, the machine failed to deliver the ticket. A note was put in the windscreen to this effect, in an attempt to keep within the law – no chance, and a ticket was duly issued.
After several phone calls and letters explaining the situation, I was told to pay £35 within 14 days or it would go up to £70.
Fearing this, I paid the £35 to avoid this happening. In the meantime, I involved the tribunal to make a decision with my complaint.

On the October 5, 2012, I received from the council a brown envelope containing 79 sheets of A4 paper concerning the case against me, covering every conceivable detail – it has to be seen to be believed.
This means the same 79 copies had been sent to the tribunal and 79 copies are in the council filing cabinet. So 237 sheets of paper were used to obtain £35 in a case which should never have been allowed to go that far. The tribunal found in my favour and the £35 had to be refunded.
If our Lord Mayor wants to make cuts, I suggest he starts with this disgraceful waste of resources.
MJE Everett, Blaby.

“MJE Everett inadvertently understates the situation - his and Father Daly's experiences involve two separate councils (the City and the County); I also doubt that the Lord Mayor would be interested in details of either, as his position is merely a ceremonial role with little influence on policy in either assembly...”
