Two GPs have been re-elected unopposed to head the organisation which will take charge of providing health services for city residents from April.

Prof Azhar Farooqi, a GP in Highfields, and Dr Avinashi Prasad, a GP in Clarendon Park, will serve as co-chairmen of the Leicester City clinical commissioning group, created as part of the Government's reforms to the NHS, for a further three years.

They were first elected to the positions last year when the group began to work in shadow form ready to take over from the Leicester City primary care trust on April 1, next year.

The group has already made a number of improvements for patients, including identifying more than 1,600 people with previously undiagnosed conditions, such as diabetes, through its health check programme for people aged 40-74.
