The victim returned home with the injured dog and contacted the emergency services but the dog, Giggs, subsequently died.
The suspects have been described as being three white men, one of them was wearing a black hooded tracksuit top and black tracksuit bottoms.
The second suspect had a freckled face, thin eyebrows and dark blonde hair. He was wearing black Nike Airmax hooded top and dark grey tracksuit bottoms.
The third suspect was wearing a black hooded coat and blue jeans. All the suspects were wearing their hoods up over their heads.
Detective Constable Jonathan Davies, said: “This was a callous crime which has left the victim and his family extremely shocked and distressed. The 10 month-old Jack Russell cross, Giggs, was violently attacked by the suspects and subsequently lost his life.
“We need to catch those responsible for this despicable crime. The incident took place during the evening at a time when most people are returning home from work, we would urge anyone who witnessed any part of the incident to contact us immediately.
“During the incident the victim pushed one of the suspects away and he may have received an injury to his face, if you know someone who has an unexplained injury since yesterday please contact us. Any calls received will be treated in confidence.”
Anyone with any information is asked to contact Det Con Jonathan Davies 101.

“Male46. They have been described as white men as it may jog peoples memories if they have seen three white men in the area matching the description. Be pretty pointless putting in the media otherwise!”

“This is disgraceful, wonder if the little (I really can't swear or I'll be banned but it begins with 'w' and ends in 's') would have been so quick to kick it if it had been a large rottweiller. Somehow I doubt it. Here's hoping karmic justice does exist.”
