Don't let hunting ban be repealed
I had to respond to the letter from Robin Johnson (Thursday, July 22) regarding hunting with dogs. It could possibly be said that "sweeping statements'' were made by both him and a previous correspondent. If dealt with statistically, there are at least 80% to 90% who disagree with this repellant activity, this I think could reasonably be described as the vast majority.
My own experience within the anti-hunt over 30 years has provided such figures on a regular basis.
Some hunting activities are found to be more abhorrent to the general public than others but by only a small margin, so hare, deer and fox hunting are almost equally rejected. I would certainly disagree with Mr Robinson that an "equal percentage'' (50%) of the population support hunting, with the intent of killing a wild animal.
Whether people wish to dress up in whatever colour and ride horses is up to them. The tortuous killing of an animal for entertainment is the element of such activity that has been banned. This latter activity must remain banned. The Prime Minister David Cameron, has pledged to allow a free vote to repeal the Hunting Act. This repeal must not happen. We are apparently a civilized country, that is looking forward into the early part of a new century, away from the barbarisms of animal abuse that happened in past times.
There are ways forward that readers can pursue in order to stymie any attempt to reinstate hunting. They can write to their MPs and ask them to sign an Early Day Motion 116 (EDM) which expresses the need to retain the Hunting Ban. They can also ask them to vote against repeal of the Ban, which if brought back brings with it the scandalous abuse of wild animals.

“The LACS who arranged a poll set out the questions in a way to get the vote the way they wanted, in a more honest vote only 43% were against hunting”

“Who is bothered about foxhunting? 'society can be measured by how it treats its most vulnerable'
if some of you cannot recognise that chasing a terrified small creature to its eventual exhaustion and destruction for ENTERTAINMENT is morally unnacceptable I feel very sad for you that I need to write this, especially you David. I would ask all those who would repeal this act this - if this were hunting terrified children or perhaps the elderly who had 'passed their sell by date' would THAT be acceptable? We're all creatures of nature after all however much some of us like to think that we're 'higher' than others.
Hilarious isn't it that the Game Fare statistics were used here - ditto Michael Clayton's letter earlier

erm, is this the same Michael Clayton???

I find myself asking why all these people are writing in local newspapers (probably all over the country) extoling the virtues of (fox)hunting - are they trying to soften us up? I wish them luck (NOT) - it's barbaric and outdated. Hopefully even David Cameron won't be daft enough to pander to the wrinklies in the Tory party.”

“Jon, Leicester
The vote you're referring to in your 'vast majority' claims was cast at The CLA Game Fair.
The CLA Game Fair bills itself as the ultimate event for the country sport participant and is a gathering of "likeminded people". This is quite clearly not a vast majority of the UK population.
Hmmm, a highly typical attempted twisting of the facts on your part, I wonder???”
