Police have today named a 70-year-old cyclist who died after a collision with a car on a country road.

David Brian Grundy, from Gilmorton, near Lutterworth, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident happened at about 9.30am yesterday on the A5199, Welford Road, just south of Shearsby, and involved a blue Vauxhall Astra estate.

The driver of the Astra was not injured.

A 70-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and has been released on police pending further inquiries.

Police have appealed for witnesses to come forward.

They believe a lorry driver, who was driving along the A5199 from Husbands Bosworth towards Shearsby, may have see either the accident or events leading up to it.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Detective Sergeant Ivan Stafford on 0116 222 2222 .

County councillor Graham Hart, who represents the area, drove past the accident scene.

He said: "This is a very busy road and safety measures have been installed in recent years.

"This accident occurred on a straight stretch before you reach some tricky bends."

“Can only say the same as Darren above. Condolences to the family, what a terrible shame. I've ridden that section of road many times myself and it's just terrible such an awful thing can happen.”

“Condolences to the family. I didn't know Dave that well but spoke to him quite often. As a fellow cyclist I have often met him out on the road around South Leics and this really brings it home. I will miss his cheery "hello".”
