EDL/UAF MARCHES: A message from Leicester Mayor, Peter Soulsby
Hundreds of people are expected to arrive in our city today to join marches led by the English Defence League and Leicester Unite Against Fascism.
There are very few people who want these marches to take place. But, fortunately, we live in a democracy and people have a right to demonstrate.
-

Leicester Mayor Peter Soulsby
This means that we have to allow them to come here, but can impose controls on what they do.
In October 2010, marches were banned but there were demonstrations that brought the city centre to a standstill for much of the day.

This time, by allowing controlled marches with very strict conditions, we believe we can greatly reduce the disruption and get things back to normal much more quickly.
Leicestershire police have been working incredibly hard to prepare for today.
I would like to commend Chief Superintendent Rob Nixon, the city centre commander, and all of those involved for their professionalism and expertise.
I would like to ask all of our citizens – young and old – to remember these marches will be over in a couple of hours.
We must not do anything that will allow them to pull our communities apart or have any kind of lasting impact.
I also call on those planning to join the marches to follow the conditions that have been set by the police for your safety, and to show you can exercise your democratic right in a peaceful way.
All at the council have been working very closely with the police to ensure that in the main it will be business as usual this weekend. Saturday night sees the second night of Leicester Comedy Festival – one of the biggest and best events in the city's cultural calendar.
Several hundred people will be coming to the city for this, and they are very welcome.
This is what Leicester is all about – a warm, friendly and peaceful city with something for everyone.
Please come into the city and enjoy the shows, the shops and restaurants and let's ensure today is remembered for the right reasons.

“I wear my St George brooch every day.As I do my British Legion brooch.Born English,Die English.{I emphathise English as a lot of people do not want to be part of Great Britain.so they can have devolution, own govenment, whatever}.
The silly thing for the Every Day Loosers to do is parade the flag of St George as an emblem to justify/identify their identity. He was a Roman who went to Turkey to fight.Never came to England. As for Useless And Foolish..can they March in Saudi for womens rights, even to drive a car,or demonstrate for the right of women not to be cir***sized here.Maybe a stroll around Syria or at least outside the Syrian Embasst in London. How would they allow the police to maimtain order?"you a Sunni?go that way"."You a Christian?that way""Oh,Greek Orthodox! Not sure""Aahh,Shiite!Just over there".........
IF there is only one thing to be learned from Saturday it is WE want a great Police force in this City. Not self serving councillors who want money in their pockets at the expence of the Police and services.”

“to answer Eastonian's question: I wonder if the 'UAF' decided to hold their own march/demonstration on some day in the future would the 'EDL' turn up on the same day purely for confrontational reasons?
Probably yes - LUAF with Love Music Hate Racism held an outdoor music event at Market Corner in October 2010. Members of the local EDL division were there and LUAF were forced to move their stall due to the intimidation received from the group who were drinking outside Lloyds pub.
They still continued to harrass and intimidate members of the LUAF who were doing nothing other than collecting signatures on a petition and also approached the stall taking posters and leaflets and ripping them up or throwing them on the floor and stamping on them. A member of the group then assaulted one the the LUAF activists (who 'coincidentally' was a muslim - the attacker was arrested and charged).
The EDL stands for fighting Islamic Extrmism? I think not.”

“Rachel_Leics,
The problem is that they don't just march...Youtube is littered with examples of them Seig Heilling and wearing Nazi regalia, despite their attempts at appearing 'normal'. Look what they did in Leicester last time. It was Adolph Hitler himself that said the opposition could haves snuffed him out early. Because they didn't, millions lost their lives and therefore 'democracy' for them was lost.
Leicester is one of my favourite cities, not least for it diversity. I'm white working class and don't feel put out by other cultures as the millionaire financiers of the EDL clearly do. White workers have always been mixed with immigrants and now my kids are mixed and all. The EDL are fascist and not some band of disgruntled unemployed innocents...”

“"Both my parents fought Nazis in WW2 and must be turning in their graves at what the EDL is allowed to do. The Mayor is quite wrong for allowing them in and also wrong for equating the 2 sides. My father wasn't a nazi for fighting them!!"
Try looking up "SS Hansar" on google, see who the Nazi enemy was.”

“The Mercury were sharp earlier on in the week when they contrasted what the EDL did to Leicester (shop-smashing and terrorising people in restaurants) with those of the UAF demonstration (which they described as peaceful). Both my parents fought Nazis in WW2 and must be turning in their graves at what the EDL is allowed to do. The Mayor is quite wrong for allowing them in and also wrong for equating the 2 sides. My father wasn't a nazi for fighting them!!”

“Someone needs to remind Peter Soulsby that only one of today's marches consisted of outsiders bussed in. Leicester UAF draws its support from Leicester, including several branches of Soulsby's own party - he shouldn't be buying into the EDL's "they are just as bad as us" line. Local people are revolted by neo-nazis.”

“"We must not do anything that will allow them to pull our communities apart or have any kind of lasting impact."
No need to worry about the marchers doing that SPS-you and your gov't did that for 13 years!
".....with something for everyone."
And there is the first blatant lie of the day from SPS!
'Eastonian' - reversed it-nice, very good question indeed!”
