Environmentalists have spoken out against plans to build a giant waste incinerator in Leicestershire.

Waste management firm Biffa's proposal to build the plant next to the M1 near Shepshed has met with opposition from residents since being revealed in the Leicester Mercury on Friday.

Members of Leicester Friends of the Earth have now come out against it, saying they believe incineration to be wasteful and potentially dangerous.

Spokesman Malcolm Hunter said: "We agree we have to stop sending most of our waste to landfill, but incineration is an outdated technology which wastes lots of potentially recoverable materials and the energy incorporated in them."

If approved the plant would be operating by 2015.

“I am with John here. I take it the 'Environmentalist as stated in this story do not creat any waste therefore giving them the right to truely be against this. If this is the case then i feel their energy would be better used teaching the rest of us how to not generate any waste. Hypercrits i say....”

“If rubbish was simply being burnt, fumes left free to go straight into the atmosphere and the energy created not harnessed to create electricity that would otherwise be sourced from elsewhere then I could understand the fuss.
Am I missing something here ?”
