Eco-town not viable
I would like to respond to the letter "Pennbury opponents in a minority" (Mailbox, July 9) from Steve Goode.
If Mr Goode were to know the area where the proposed site is located then he will see that the infrastructure is not adequate enough and would require at least a billion pounds in spending to bring it up to a standard that would be acceptable.
This would in turn lead to years of misery for commuters trying to travel to Leicester in the mornings and evenings. Mr Goode is severely deluded if he thinks that as part of this scheme the Co-op are going to pay for the infrastructure.
I am sorry, but it would not make this scheme commercially viable.
The Co-op have never given any response to the question of how much profit they have forecast they will make from this scheme.
Mr Goode's comment that this space is available is again sorely misled as this area is prime agricultural land.
Maybe the Government should think about spreading the housing around as there are plenty of green fields adjacent to Countesthorpe and the road infrastructure is much better served from there, so maybe this would be a better site?
Does Mr Goode seriously think that the local councils will pay for the infrastructure, without clawing the cash back from the residents of Leicestershire, Oadby and Wigston, Leicester city and the like?
Wake up, Mr Goode, and stop dreaming that this scheme is viable in its present location.
Andrew Johnson, Faithful+Gould, Nottingham.

“After today's announcement by the DCLG the appalling "Pennbury" proposal which didn't even make the reserve shortlist should, by rights, confined to the dustbin.
There is no justification for the Co-op to continue with this wretched plan that nobody wants.
Their corner should throw the towel in!!”

“Do not worry Andrew the scheme is not going ahead, all those who tried to justify this can now focus on something else. At last the goverment has done somthing sensible for a change”
