MP Alan Duncan has called for the Royal Mail to end cases of Rutland addresses being labelled as Leicestershire.

The Rutland and Melton MP has been arguing for the county's independence to be respected in the postal system for more than a decade.

He is now calling on his constituents who have had their addresses wrongly marked to help sort out the problem by sending him their addresses.

Despite the county having regained its status as a unitary authority in 1997, many addresses are marked as falling within Leicestershire.

In some cases, online retail systems do not recognise Rutland as a county, forcing shoppers to put down the wrong county to ensure delivery.

Mr Duncan said: "Many of us are fed up with receiving bills, letters or packages that make Rutland out to be in Leicestershire or, worse, not exist at all.

"It shouldn't be hard to companies to get the basics right.

"We are our own county and want to be recognised. I call on people who have had their Rutland addresses put in the wrong county to get in touch, so I can show Royal Mail where the gaps in the system are."

People should send their address to:

“The way Royal Mail allocates codes & addresses is archaic and most confusing. Kegworth & Castle Donington are in Leicestershire but the Royal Mail labels them as DE (for Derby). Meanwhile, East Leake - in Notts - is merrily labelled LE (for Leicester) by them.

Besides helping to cement Rutland's true identity then it is also important that someone moving into the area has a clearer indication of which council will be taxing them as one local estate agency uses the RM's arbitrary code to determine the county in their window displays.”
