An engineering firm, which had its biggest contract scuppered by the Government, has axed 24 jobs after going into administration yesterday.

H Beesley, in Freemen's Common, Leicester, lost more than £1m after the Government stopped it from completing a contract to supply parts to Iran.

Officials said the components could have been used in the production of nuclear weapons.

Managers hope to safeguard the remaining 99 jobs by buying the company back from the administrators.

“Well he's obviously hiding isn't he!! Feeling guilty?! He's hoping they will go away - very doubtful. It's time someone stood up to this Labour Government and their puppets.”

“Good luck to all those who have lost their job and the company does manage to resurrect itself.

Labour have forced this on the company. So much for being the party of the working man and supporting business.”

“Yet again, the survival of a previously thriving company in the engineering sector has been put in jeopardy by the inconsistent, stand-alone policies of this shambles of a 'government'. Having initially granted permission for the Iranian order to be fulfilled, it is morally wrong to pull the plug in mid-stream, knowing that it would have such serious repercussions for the smaller companies involved. Is it any wonder that engineering in this country is a declining industry when it is subject to this kind of knee-jerk policy making. Questions should be asked in the House as to why H Beesley have been placed in this desperate position whilst other EEC members continue to supply this project with impunity.”
