Residents in St Matthew's, Leicester, are to be recruited to help decide how to spend £ million on the estate.

The estate was granted the cash a year ago and the plan is to set up a local partnership of residents to decide how to spend it. The National Lottery cash came through the new Big Local scheme, which gives cash to improve the country's most run-down estates.

St Matthew's has high unemployment, low wages, social exclusion and a historical lack of investment.

Half-term week, which begins on February 11, will see a variety of events in St Matthew's which will be used to recruit community-spirited residents.

“Plenty of ground overlooking Willow Brook that would be good for gypsy sites as it is not overlooked and easily shielded, good access for schools, shops and doctors. The council has the money so would not take anything from the £1million.
Maybe tidy up the mosques and temples that crop up.I think the council have a 50/50 share of costs for this,to a limit, for the area.
Maybe get Willow Brook tidied up.Any property/business backing on to the brook has a legal requirement to maintain it[Ruparian Rights]so they can pay towards it.
What it does need is a good cctv system on the streets,so the area is better monitored. It is close to Belgrave/Melton Roads where robberies, drugs and gangs are on the increase.
I believe St Mathews had the first community police station, but the council decided it was not necessary and it closed.Maybe open it again?”
