Community groups have been given more time to come up with ideas for ways of helping to prevent lung disease.

Those with good ideas can bid for a pot of money ranging from £500 to £5,000 to fund their project.

The Leicester City Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), which will take on responsibility for running local health services in April, has set aside a total of £80,000 for the scheme, called Health in your Hands.

They are hoping groups will come up with new ways of helping to tackle the lung condition known as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Professor Azhar Farooqi, chairman of the CCG, said: "We have had a high volume of requests for bidding application packs at the last minute and we want to ensure the application process is fair for everyone and each group has enough time to send us their ideas.

"The project is the first of its kind to be run by a CCG in the East Midlands and, possibly even across the country, and we want to make sure we get the process right.

"We want as many groups as possible to submit ideas, bid for money and manage the project themselves so they really see the benefit of what they are doing."

If the scheme is successful it could be extended to tackle other health conditions, such as heart disease and diabetes. The application deadline has been extended from Monday, February 4, to February 11.

All applications will be considered and successful bidders will be asked to present their ideas at a special event when members of the public will have a chance to vote for the best projects.

This will be held on Saturday, March 2, at the Peepul Centre, Orchardson Avenue, Leicester. For details, ring 0116 295 1123 or 0116 295 4159 or visit:

“You are flogging a dead horse. Just watch them spitting everywhere. Drop a fag end and boy you are in trouble but spitting on the floor so people walk in it, no wonder Leicester is full of TB AGAIN.”
