Eric Goodyer states that the EU deserves the award of the Nobel Peace Prize for delivering the longest period of peace in European history ("Prize deserved", Mailbox, October 19).

What peace? The far right is gaining more support all over Europe; daily on TV news programmes we see rioting in Europe's capital cities, much of it racially motivated.

The Golden Dawn party in Greece attacks immigrants with apparent impunity, its leaders claim many of its party members are serving police officers. In Spain and Germany right wing parties are gaining support and it will get worse.

The Nobel Peace Prize has been mired in controversy for years and this latest risible, politically motivated award will cause even more controversy.

Eric seeks to further justify this prize by suggesting the £9 billion we give to the crooks in Brussels every year is a fraction of the cost of a nuclear bomb.

I haven't bought any nuclear bombs recently, but I would have thought you could pick up a half tidy piece of nuclear ordnance for that amount and you would not have to spend another £9 billion every 12 months, either.

Don Tallis, Wigston.

“No Graham_LE8 and Graydjames I am not a tax evader/avoider - I should be so lucky - I wish I was but unfortunately my income is below the tax threshold; also I do not read tabloid newspapers.

It always amuses me when people get agitated about some individual evading a few pounds tax but these same people quite happily use the services and consume the products of some of the world's largest multi-national companies who together avoid paying billions of pounds tax.

    Happy Christmas, Don.”

“Does anyone actually care who gets the Nobel Peace Prize?, or any Nobel prize for that matter. Like so many things it has become increasingly irrelevant to most folk.”

“What a silly letter. There have been riots in Europe, but most of them have been orgamised by the extreme left, not the extreme right.”

“As is more often the case than not, Graham_LE8's comment is spot on.

And I can add that whether or not Mr Tallis is a serial tax evader, I can certainly state categorically that he condones it because he said as much in a letter printed earlier this year following the "cash payments to traders" debate started by David Gauke. In a letter of response from myself I pointed out to him in no uncertian terms the error of his ways.”

“Don Tallis often makes comments noteworthy of tabloid influence, and here are two more in the same vein.
Riots, racial, religious and political unrest often have an almost volcanic nature, bubbling up occasionally here and there, and less frequently erupting into the headlines - so it has been, and dare I say always will continue.

Militarily, Europe has enjoyed stability for almost the whole period since the end of the second world war (even during the collapse of the Iron curtain) except during the '90's breakdown of cohesion within the former Yugoslavia, when the combined efforts of the UN, NATO and EU intervened, and prevented what would in previous times escalated into regional, or continental war. I can see a justification for the prize, although the cynic in me does think it was really because they couldn't think of anyone else to give it to.

As far as nuclear weapons are concerned, given the choice of a dodgy Del Boy item at half the price of an M&S one, I know which one I'd like lumbering through our countryside...

And unless he's one of these topical tax evaders/avoiders I've heard of lately, chances are like me he's brought a few over the years.”
