Rearsby: The owners of a newly-opened farm shop are delighted that they seem to be filling the role of the traditional village store.

The new venture, Oakdale Farm Shop, in Melton Road, Rearsby, opened this month and is already receiving praise from villagers eager to shop locally, says Angela Goodger.

"The opening day attracted around 300 people and there's been a steady stream of business ever since. It's a long-time ambition to open a farm shop and we're delighted with the response so far," adds Angela, who runs the shop with her husband, Martyn.

"It's not just Rearsby people using the shop – they're coming from surrounding villages as well.

"At one time many larger villages like Rearsby had some form of food shop, but they're long gone, along with village post offices, although Rearsby's Post Office operates once a week from the village pub.

"As far as we can, we want the products we stock to be sourced locally. We sell milk and dairy products, meat, fruit and vegetables and items such as, bread, cakes and honey.

"As well as those sourced from local producers and growers, we are also supplied by many individuals who make their produce with great dedication in their own kitchens.

"So people who shop locally are also supporting local businesses and employment. Wherever possible we'll be buying Leicestershire products," adds Angela, "and they'll be available seven days a week."

Longer-term plans for the farm shop site include developing an area for teas, coffees and light snacks.
