We all know he has a flair for fashion – but now TV stylist Gok Wan is hoping his cookery skills will prove to be more than just a flash in the pan, too.

The Leicester star will soon be hitting our screens with a new show, Gok Cooks Chinese, alongside his father, John.

The pair are promising to rustle up home cooked Chinese food, which has long gone down a storm at the Wan dinner table.

Gok, who grew up in Beaumont Leys, worked in several of his parent's restaurants in the city when he was younger.

On his website, the fashion guru said he was looking forward to showcasing his other great passion in life.

"Having been working in my dad's restaurants since I was five-years-old I thought it was about time to show you a few of my favourite recipes and special tips I have learnt from Poppa Wan," he said.

"I will be rustling up everything from street food to feast food to tantalise those taste buds.

"Get those chop sticks ready."

The series of six half hour shows starts on Channel 4 in May. The programmes will show Gok cooking healthy and quick meals he has devised himself, using basic ingredients and a wok, with a little help from his dad.

John, and Gok's mother, Myra, ran Whetstone Fishbar in Victoria Road, Whetstone, for 12 years before retiring in 2010.

Mr Wan, who was in the food industry for about 50 years, also ran restaurants and takeaways in Northampton Street, Humberstone Road, Fosse Road North and in Evington.

Gok's brother, Kwoklyn, 38, who runs Urban Martial Arts gym in St John's Street, Leicester, said he was looking forward to seeing the show.

"It will be really nice to see my dad and brother working together on tv," he said.

"My dad is an amazing chef – the food he cooks is really brilliant.

"When he had the restaurants he was brilliant as front of house. People would come in and they would just say, 'Feed us,' and my dad would create really personal, great food.

"I'm not sure what dishes they will be cooking, but I remember things like salt fish and salt chicken, and lots of steamed stuff, like steamed egg and pork.

"Food has always been in our lives. I learned to be a chef in the kitchens, while my brother and sister would do front of house.

"It will be fun to see dad on the TV.

"He is a funny little Chinese man so I think he will be great."

Channel 4's Katie Boyd, who commissioned the series, said: "Gok's a whiz with a wok – and his delectable yet simple Chinese recipes are made to make your mouth water."

Show producer Pat Llewellyn added: "Gok's Chinese way of cooking feels incredibly modern – fresh ingredients cooked so quickly it makes 30 minute meals look like slow motion."
