Leicester Mercury

My wife and I have recently taken part in a successful three-way kidney exchange in the renal unit at Leicester General Hospital.

Before being admitted we were both apprehensive because of articles in the press (although not in the Mercury) about contemporary standards of nursing.

We feel it is important to give your readers another point of view and to correct some of the bias of previous reporting. It would be impossible to fault the quality of the nursing we received. All nurses, both graduates and non-graduates, were superb.

They were all very competent, kind, friendly and professional.

The great value of nurses to society should be recognised and acknowledged more frequently.

The highest praise should also be given to the world-class surgical transplant team, led by Prof Michael Nicholson at the General.

They are showing that the often-maligned NHS has many years of high achievement remaining.

Leicester and its surroundings are very fortunate in having access to such a high-class renal transplant unit.
