Marks & Spencer's flagship Fosse Park store has become one of the first in the country to benefit from the company's £600 million overhaul programme.

M&S is revamping stores across the country as it seeks to turnaround its fortunes.

The makeover of the 85,000 sq ft Fosse Park store, which has created 50 jobs, makes it the third M&S in the country to get a new-look home department offering more technology-based products.

It is also one of the first handful of stores to offer a deli counter with a pasta bar.

Other improvements include a better clothing section, cafe and bakery.

Store manager Mark Fruin said: "Shoppers in Fosse Park are some of the very first in the country to see many of M&S's new concepts, including the new home and beauty departments and deli counter with pasta bar.

"We're confident that the improvements we have made have created an even more inviting and inspiring environment for our customers to shop in."

The new format home department includes iPads and 32inch screens, allowing customers to view and order from the company's catalogue. Another 30 stores are set to receive this new look by Christmas.

Bosses hope the makeover will help lure back under 35s, with many having turned their back on the retailer after feeling it was behind the times.

M&S's Fosse Park store is one of the high street stalwart's most important outlets.

A decade ago, it was one of the first in the country selected to launch fashion guru George Davies' Per Una range of women's wear, which helped to revive the company's fortunes following a lull in trade.

Meanwhile, Fosse Park is the UK's leading out-of-town retail park. Opened in 1989 and featuring 40 stores, it attracts 12 million visitors a year.

Adrian Young, centre manager at Fosse Park, said: "The significant investment by M&S shows the confidence the retailer has in the park. The resulting store is fantastic news for our shoppers, great news for Leicestershire and will be great business for M&S.

"It is one of an ongoing series of store upgrades at Fosse Park."
