Food giant Samworth Brothers is to open a new factory to the north east of Leicester.

The firm, which employs 5,500 people at its eight plants in Leicestershire, has agreed a deal to buy a 12.3-acre area of land at Ashton Green, Beaumont Leys, from Leicester City Council.

The firm would not say whether its new production facility would be an expansion of the business or a relocation from another of its sites.

The city council said the complex will create new jobs but neither it, nor the company, has said how many.

A spokesman for the company said: "We expect to exchange contracts with the council in the next few weeks.

"Full completion of the sale in 2013 will be dependent on planning consents being granted, the construction of an access road and vacant possession of the site. We are in the early planning stages, so we have no further information."

Should all go according to plan, Samworth Brothers hopes to move into a new complex in early 2013.

City mayor Peter Soulsby said: "Attracting businesses to bring new jobs and economic regeneration to the area will be vital to its success.

"At a time when every job created counts, I am delighted we have agreed this deal."

The city council is leading a wider Ashton Green project, which aims to create new business and a community of 3,000 homes which will include a range of family houses including low-cost properties, new schools, community and health facilities, public transport improvements and shops.

The council is negotiating with a number of housing developers with the aim of selecting a partner in 2013.
