The Friday Interview: Leicester City stars reunite to celebrate taming of the Shrews
It will be unbelievable and emotional," promises former Leicester City striker Alan Young, who has helped organise a special evening to celebrate one of the most memorable FA Cup games in the club's history.
Members of Jock Wallace's 1982 squad who reached the FA Cup semi-finals will come together for the first time to look back on an amazing and dramatic quarter-final tie against Shrewsbury Town at Filbert Street in March that year.
It was a game which produced seven goals, including an own goal, had plenty of controversial moments, saw City forced to use three different goalkeepers and ended with them coming through to book a semi-final clash with Tottenham Hotspur.
Young played a vital role that day as he donned the goalkeeper's jersey – twice – after Mark Wallington was injured as City emerged 5-2 victors.
"It was an iconic game in Leicester City's history," said Young. "It was a game that had everything.
"The number of people who come up to me and say they remember that game is incredible. They remember where they stood that day. What a game it was.
"Graham Lee, a supporter for many years, approached me and reminded me it was the 30th anniversary of that match. We thought it was appropriate to mark the occasion with a night of celebration.
"We got Simon Kimber from the Fox Magazine on board and the club historian, John Hutchinson.
"We felt it was a game we had to celebrate."
The evening will take place on Thursday, March 15, in the Keith Weller Lounge at the King Power Stadium, and Young said the majority of the team will be there.
"Mark Wallington, Ian Wilson, Tommy Williams, Paul Friar, Andy Peake, Larry May, Steve Lynex, Jim Melrose and myself have confirmed, and we are waiting on John O'Neil and Eddie Kelly, plus we are hopeful on Gary Lineker," said Young.
"We have got extended highlights of the game and we will stop it at certain points and ask the players what they were thinking at that time.
"Then we have a straight question-and-answer session from the floor to the players, plus an auction and raffle with proceeds going to Cancer Research UK and the Bobby Smith Cancer Fund. His widow, Dot, will be there to receive it, along with his two boys, and we have Jock's widow, Daphne Wallace, coming too.
"We have some surprise guests turning up as well.
"It will be the first time all the lads have ever all got together. It will be unbelievable.
"There will be laughter and tears. It is going to be emotional."
Young may have been unconscious at one point but he has clear memories of that game, and he will share them with the audience on the night.
"We were winning through a Larry May goal but lost Mark Wallington through injury after a horrendous challenge from Chic Bates," he said.
"Mark had a huge hole in his thigh from that and it was amazing Chic wasn't sent off. These days he wouldn't be allowed to play again after that!
"Mark tried to limp on but we conceded two goals as he couldn't move, before I replaced him between the posts.
"I then got clattered by Bernard McNally and was knocked out and Steve Lynex went in goal, but Shrewsbury scored an own-goal just before half-time to make it 2-2.
"After my head cleared, I went back in goal and Lynex played a key role on the wing in setting up two goals for substitute Jim Melrose and one for Gary Lineker, which gave us a fantastic 5-2 win and set up a semi-final with Tottenham at Villa Park.
"We lost in the semi-final, but that was all Ian Wilson's fault and I will tell him so on the night.
"All the lads are looking forward to it. They don't want to miss it and I hope City fans want to join us, too, to enjoy the occasion."
Tickets are priced £55 per person or £500 for a table of 10. For more details and to book, visit:

“I was at the game, it was a classic, it made an East Enders Xmas special look like an episode of ballamory, excellent! What a team, Ian Wilson, class! Youngy was my hero, Lynex, fantastic! Larry a star! Eddie Kelly midfield General, looked as old as one to? Bobby Smith, a legend! **** hair do though, bless him! And only 2.50 to get in the members enclosure if I remember right? What a time to be a fan, I used to go home and away with my dad and his mates, a few underage beverages, great days, thanks to all of them, Mark Wallington was as good a goalie as any at that time to.”
