Friday Interview: Neil Danns aiming to hit all the right notes at Leicester City
There is no doubt that new Leicester City signing Neil Danns is determined to be a big hit, both on and off the pitch.
Danns' determination to make a telling impact for Sven-Goran Eriksson's side and help steer them to the Premier League will be music to the ears of City fans, but the 28-year-old is also hoping to hit all the right notes away from the Walkers Stadium too.
The Liverpool-born midfielder relaxes away from football but writing and producing his own music, and has posted several of his creations on his own website.
He describes his work as "acoustic indie-urban" and has received good reviews from people who have tuned in on-line to listen.
Having also completed a diploma in video editing, videos of his creations are on YouTube and he admits music is a passion, although he warns he has no aspirations to be the next "Bono or Rod Stewart".
"I play guitar and write my own songs, and keep the fans entertained off the pitch as well as on it," said Danns, who joined City earlier this week after becoming a free agent at the end of his contract with Crystal Palace.
"I have posted a couple of songs to my website and it is something I like to do after training.
"I don't take my music too seriously. It is just a hobby I have always done. I play a bit of guitar and I got some good feedback when I posted a few songs on YouTube.
"A lot of players go off and play golf and other stuff, while I like to relax and play my guitar, and write my songs.
"I will definitely release some songs in the future but, at the moment, it is just a spare-time thing and I am fully focused on my football.
"I am not looking to be the next Bono or Rod Stewart or anything like that. I just do it for fun.
"I listen to all different types of music but I play more acoustic, indie stuff.
"When I am on my own I take the braids out and let the Afro out and grab my guitar. I look the part."
It can often be a little daunting when a player joins a new club and meets his new team-mates for the first time, but Danns has no such worries when he joins up with City for pre-season training today.
Danns is a bubbly character and it is no surprise that he already knows several of the City squad.
"I know Paul Gallagher, Lee Peltier and Richie Wellens because I have played with them before, and I know Lloyd Dyer and Steve Howard," he said.
"I have already had brief conversations with them.
"I know quite a few of the lads and it helps when you settle in. I am sure I will be able to settle in quickly."
Danns intends to enjoy his time at City but he knows there is serious business to be carried out on the pitch, and he is relishing the challenge of helping City return to the Premier League.
"I feel Leicester are in a good position to have a go and challenge for the Premier League spot," he said.
"I have seen the players they have signed and the names they have been linked with, and there is a lot of quality already at the club too.
"It will be incredibly tough but I am sure we are in a strong position to challenge, and I want to play my part too."
