Hundreds of school children had the day off today when a digger hit a gas main this morning.

Staff at Charnwood College in Loughborough were advised by National Grid to evacuate the main hall shortly after 8.24am.

But staff decided the incident, some 50 yards from the school, had left the site unsafe.

A notice was posted on the school website and parents were informed of what had happened.

Supplies were not disrupted to local properties and National Grid engineers are on scene to repair the damage.

A National Grid spokesman said: “It was an accidental event involving a digger which caused a leak in a medium pressure pipe.”
