Girls football: Leicester City Lions go clear with smart win
Leicester City Lions produced possibly their best performance of the season to beat title rivals Asfordby Amateurs 7-1 and go clear at the top of the Under-14 Division.
Lions took the lead when Mops Wilkes poked home a pass from Chloe McFarlane.
Charlotte 'CC' Cooper made it 2-0, lashing in a Jamie Elday corner.
Asfordby then had their best spell of the match. Keeper Harriet Rowland made some fine saves but could not prevent Asfordby scoring a deserved goal.
The Lions defence was being tested but the pressure was relieved on the stroke of half-time with a Minty Potterton-Orton strike from the edge of the box following a Charlotte 'Mini' Cooper corner.
In the second-half, after some fine play between Elday, Olivia Tiger-Wright and Georgia Neal, 'CC' Cooper planted the ball in the corner.
'CC' Cooper scored again from a move started by a throw from replacement keeper Amelia Faulkner. Neal released 'CC' Cooper to score her fourth.
Lions wrapped up the game when 'Mini' Cooper sent over a corner and Neal headed in at the near post.
Syston Town Bees slipped to a 2-1 defeat at Oadby Owls in the Under-11 Division.
Bees found themselves under pressure from the start and the defence of Stacey Perrin and Annabelle Heighway had to be in form. Goalkeeper Hannah Smith dealt well with an early shot.
The Bees midfield of Emily Hollingshead, Taya Moore and Katie Wright did well while striker Leah Davies was a constant threat.
Despite going behind, Bees created chances and Davies had a shot saved.
However, Smith could do nothing about Oadby's second, which was a great shot.
Eventually, Bees got a reward when Davis scored with a low drive. Bailey Jackson went on off the bench at the start of the second half and made an impact by having a couple of attempts on goal.
Perrin had the final chance to earn a draw but her powerful shot went inches wide.
BEES: Hannah Smith (capt), Shona Worth, Stacey Perrin, Emily Hollingshead, Gina White-Leslie, Ava Fenemore, Katie Wright, Bailey Jackson, Leah Davies, Taya Moore, Annabel Heighway.
