Volunteers are being sought to support visitors at Glen Parva Young Offenders' Institution.

Helen Ross, who co-ordinates the visitor centre, needs to recruit volunteers to help out.

Last year, almost 10,000 adults and children passed through the centre on their way to visit young offenders there.

Mrs Ross said: "Visitors to Glen Parva can find the whole thing very upsetting.

"They need a friendly face and a sympathetic ear to guide them through what can appear to be a very overwhelming process.

"Volunteers really make a difference to this experience."

Isobel McEwen, 52, is among those who have already signed up to volunteer regularly.

Her day job is as a teaching programmes administrator at the Department of Criminology at the University of Leicester.

She said: "This is an ideal volunteering opportunity for me."

“I think more people to handle the booking line would be of more benifit, It is often a discussion in the queue for the visit that the it has taken a number of days of ringing a constantly engaged phone line to book the visit. And then of course when you do get through the stress of the woman who is handling the calls rubs of very easy.”
