Birstall are the County under-35s scratch knock-out champions for the fifth year in a row.

They finished five-up on aggregate against Cosby in the 36-hole final at Glen Gorse.

Cosby led after the opening round when their top pairing of James Billingham and Matt Peyton were three-up against Chris Webb and Scott Wormleighton.

The other game saw Cosby's Oli Walmsley and Luke Burrows finish all square against Jack Merry and Stuart Marriott.

But both Birstall pairs won three out of the first four holes of the afternoon session to take a three-up lead.

Cosby battled back to one-up in the top match and one-down in the second, all square overall after 27 holes.

The golf was of a high quality with lots of birdies, particularly over the closing stretch.

The top game swung back towards Birstall, with Webb and Wormleighton taking a two-hole lead before a bogey-five at the last forced them to settle for a one-up win.

In game two, holes 12 and 13 were halved in birdies before Birstall pulled away to four-up after 15 holes, where Merry and Marriott made their second birdie-two of the day.

They ended four-up to ensure Birstall again claimed the title.

In the earlier rounds, Birstall beat Melton Mowbray and Forest Hill, while Cosby won against Kirby Muxloe and Whetstone.
