Golf: Green king Flavelle is relishing trip of lifetime
Lingdale's Thomas Flavelle has flown to the USA for the start of an exciting trip after being named the Toro Student Greenkeeper of 2012 in the autumn.
The award was made in conjunction with the British & International Greenkeepers Association (BIGGA) and Toro's distributor Lely UK, and is rated as the most coveted and prestigious in greenkeeping anywhere in the world.
Around 3,500 students from around the country were eligible to compete for the top award.
The first date on Flavelle's itinerary after flying to Philadelphia was at the University of Massachusetts for the start of a six-week residential turf management course.

He said: "Although I will get fully detailed information when I arrive, I have been told that there will be a key emphasis on turf science and insect science.
"I am very excited to have this great opportunity.
"I will also be going to the Toro global headquarters in Minneapolis and the important Golf Industry Show & Conference, which takes place in San Diego towards the end of my trip."
Judges at the final, held at BIGGA headquarters in York, said they were impressed by Flavelle's dedication to greenkeeping and the pride he takes in his work.
He is a keen golfer himself, playing off a handicap of two, following in the footsteps of his father, Dave, who is the course manager at Western Park.
