Greg Eason inspired a final-day rally for his University of Central Florida (UCF) team in the Gator Invitational at the Mark Bostock course in Gainesville, USA.

The Kirby Muxloe golfer helped UCF finish fourth in the inter-collegiate tournament after they moved up the field on the final day of the two-day, 54-hole event.

In the first of five tournaments in the spring season, Eason opened with rounds of 72 and 75 for the 36 holes completed on day one when UCF were in sixth place. He fired level-par 70 on day two, one of the best rounds of the day.

UCF ended in a tie for fourth, and Eason, their second-lowest team scorer, tied for 14th.

He said: "The first day didn't go so well, so I was pleased to do better in my final round."

This marked a return to competitive action for Eason, who suffered a wrist injury after making a stunning start to his career in America, gaining a host of awards and a string of top-10 finishes during his first year.

The County Alliance is due to return today after bad weather led to the calling-off of the previous two tournaments.

A betterball Stableford is planned at Humberstone Heights, although some of the leading contenders in both the professional and amateur orders of merit will be missing because they are competing in the County PGA overseas pro-am in Portugal.

New joint England Golf president Paul Baxter attended his first official function since taking office when County president Roger Barker hosted the annual dinner at Hinckley.

Baxter, a past chief executive of the English GU, spent 23 years with the organisation he joined in Leicester in 1985 – eight as deputy secretary and 15 as chief executive.

While the EGU was based in Leicester, before moving its headquarters to Woodhall Spa, Baxter lived in the county.

Barker (Longcliffe) also welcomed representatives of other Midland counties and of county clubs, as well as present and past County officials and players.

County captain Stuart Marriott (Birstall) announced the award of the coveted Cameron Trophy for the outstanding contribution to county golf in the last year to club-mate Steve Sansome.

Sansome won the County Order of Merit for the second successive season in 2011 and is a Leicestershire first-team regular.
