Budding County golfers have been put through their paces with some rigorous coaching sessions for the season ahead.

It is part of intensive preparation for under-14s to 18-year-olds, some of whom have already represented Leicestershire in matches and tournaments.

Ian Bailey coaches the under-18 and under-16 squads at Beedles Lake, with Lee Sheldon running under-14 sessions.

The latest get-together, at Beedles Lake, with Bailey, was for under-18 and under-16 members of the County boys' first and second-team squads.

Bailey said: "The golf swing is a personal thing, but there are a number of 'controllables' that need to be in place to maximise a players' learning and performance, especially when working at an elite level.

"So the main focus of our programme is to encourage the player to identify what they have control of and to apply these 'controllables' before making any swing motion, whether it be a putt, chip, fairway or tee shot.

"Our 'controllable' focus list includes a warm-up routine before playing any type of golf, including exercise to raise the heart rate, followed by a structure of stretching, body-motion and hand and arm swing, pre-shot routine and visualisation, and course management preparation.

"We also focus on putting together a tournament schedule that contains all relevant information that will impact on a youngster's golf, such as exams, revision time, family holidays and commitments, fixtures and practice.

"For tournaments they need to be well prepared, arrange practice rounds and know what info to glean from them.

"Heading towards the season, we will be focusing a lot more on course management. We aim to be in the best shape possible to achieve success."

David Gibson, the boys' under-18s manager, said: "The boys have a very full season at all the age levels, so it is crucial to get a lot of intense preparation done at this time of the year.

"All the squad sessions have been going very well and there is a good support and an advice system in place for everyone. We are all aiming to continue striving for success."
