The Good Earth, Leicester
It was the gothic script on the restaurant sign that first hinted at what lay inside this wholesome venue. The Good Earth is where people who can't afford an Easyjet flight to Europe can write their first novel, while stuffing themselves with heart-warming food.
As you may have guessed, this is probably one of the most surprising places I've ever eaten in Leicester, mainly because it transported me far away from the city and into what felt like the heart of the Alps.
The first floor dining room of this vegetarian restaurant is all wooden panelling and scythes along the walls. The second floor, which was empty when we visited, is beamed and presents an intriguing mix of chalet-style, old-world charm.
It took me back to trips to Switzerland and Germany, where dark wooden halls lit by candles gave way to beer and schnitzel.
But there was obviously no schnitzel-gorging going on here, because The Good Earth sells veggie food, and it does it very well.
At first we were a little confused about how to order but it soon became clear that the restaurant works on a cafeteria basis.
So we helped ourselves to apple and raisin salad while red wine casserole with cheese and a vegetable slice were put onto plates for us.
We then cast our eyes over the tempting selection of homemade cakes before plumping for with carrot cake and lemon cake.
My friend's casserole was exceptional, the cheese was crunchy and moreish and I didn't even miss the lack of meat because it was so tasty.
My vegetarian slice was more of a pile than a slice but it was bursting with flavour.
Of the desserts, my carrot cake was definitely the front-runner, with a creamy thick topping and chunky, nutty texture.
Looking around us it was clear this place attracts loyal customers, and the lack of background music meant a cloud of calm filled the place while we ate.
This is a family-run place with an endearingly quaint outlook. Take time to nip down this side street and choose from a range of dishes that echo the kind your best friend's hippy mother would have made when you were a child. The prices aren't cheap but you'll get a decent return on your cash at The Good Earth – and you'll feel a bit healthier into the bargain. The bill came to £19.85, including two teas.

“As a child in the 70¿s and 80¿s, my mother (who also attended the jazz nights they held then) always took me to The Good Earth for lunch whenever we went (from Kibworth) into Leicester shopping. I continued to treat myself to lunch there (served by the very same staff of my childhood) throughout my 20¿s and 30¿s. Having left the area 10 years ago, I have often wondered if it was still there and am delighted (via Google) to find that it is. I am not a vegetarian but The Good Earth has always been my very favourite place to eat! My particular favourites were the vegetable bake and the scrummy chocolate (oat?) cakes with a small salad and lashings of Earl Grey tea! I wonder if it is still under the same ownership/management but from the description in your article, it sounds as if very little about the food, decor and atmosphere in this wholesome gastronomic haven has changed. Let¿s hope it continues so for many decades to come and I will certainly make a speedy beeline for it whenever I find myself in Leicester again!”
