'Good Egg' award for council service
Leicester City Council has been given an award for using free-range eggs in its catering services.
By refusing to buy eggs laid by battery caged hens, the council has been honoured with a ''Good Egg'' award – a scheme run by Compassion in World Farming to encourage public and private sector organisations to switch to free-range eggs.
For the past three years, City Catering – the council's catering arm – has used only free-range eggs in its schools and hospitality.
Councillor Sarah Russell said: "Animal welfare is a key consideration for the city council, it has a significant influence on purchasing decisions.''
