Good hygiene is out of reach

Continuing with the lack of hygiene practices in the city, as experienced by C Williams (Mailbox, January 9) and Helen Waddon, Mailbox, January 12) I have the following comments to make.

The ladies' toilets in the Haymarket shopping centre have one soap dispenser attached to either end of the wall of the communal wash basins (two in total), making it impossible to get soap without reaching over people at the basins.

In the run-up to Christmas, when everywhere was busy, I noticed that not all ladies were washing their hands, or even trying to use the soap dispensers.

I did use the dispenser, only to be met by an angry stare as I excused myself to lean over the disgruntled lady using the outside basin.

I now avoid using these toilets as best as I can and I also carry a bottle of disinfecting gel as I think of all the germs on the doors and toilet handles.

The lady cleaning these toilets does a good job, but the council should certainly install more soap dispensers so they are within reach.

At the start of the month, I'm sure many readers made new year's resolutions.

If these involved drinking less alcohol, you may be interested to hear that a new group is forming in Leicester to promote temperance – abstaining from alcohol completely.

The town has a strong connection to the temperance movement of old, a fact mentioned in a recent broadcast by BBC radio Leicester.

If you would like to learn more about the history of temperance in Leicester or to sign the pledge, please get in touch with the group at:

I wonder if any of your readers could tell me if there was a Selfridges in Leicester?

I think there was one in the 1960s, but my husband says there wasn't. Who is right?

S Curran, Leicester.
