Great cup victory for Birstall United Vixens
Birstall United Vixens produced a gr-eight performance in the Leicester City & County League Cup first round.
They beat Thurmaston Pink Panthers 8-1 with Poppy Gordon getting four of them.
The whistle blew and Ella Wortley sprinted off towards the Thurmaston goal and only just missed scoring.
Birstall's efforts were awarded after just two minutes with a fine goal by Poppy Gordon, coming from a throw-in by Emily Gunn.
Thurmaston were not to be outdone and shot the ball towards the Birstall end.
Birstall keeper Lucy Hayward picked up the ball in what she thought was the goal area but the markings were poor and a free kick was awarded to Thurmaston. Up stepped a Thurmaston player to equalise.
The game continued at a frenetic pace with Thurmaston showing no hesitation in tackling to gain possession.
Birstall's attack of Poppy Gordon, Amy Collins, Ella Wortley and Emily Gunn kept up the pace and were equally keen to wrest control of the ball.
Even Birstall's defence of Emily Carnan, EJ Gordon and Hollie Wilkinson moved up to the other end with Carnan having a strong attempt on goal, while Zoe Frearson held back to control any loose balls.
Thurmaston didn't let up and made a great attempt on goal with the ball just skimming over the cross bar.
Poppy Gordon, however, regained the lead for Birstall with a powerful shot.
Birstall were starting to take control and Collins crossed for Wortley to score Birstall's third.
The second half started at the same pace with Collins and Gunn immediately taking the game to Thurmaston.
Sarah Olsen ran towards the goal, and having tackled six Thurmaston players only just missed scoring. Poppy Gordon made it 4-1 from Olsen's cross.
Courtney Preston and Bayley Kay were brought on at half-time for Birstall and showed tenacity.
Birstall were playing good football. Once such move resulted in Olsen scoring when the ball rebounded off the Thurmaston keeper.
The game was now firmly in Birstall's hand with a goal each coming off the boot of Collins, Poppy Gordon and Collins again in the last nine minutes.
Birstall's player of the match was Wilkinson.
Asfordby Aces overpowered and outplayed a below-strength but spirited Weddington Thistle team to the tune of 16-1 in the Leicester City & Girls League's Under-14 Division.
1-0 (5 mins): Nailah Master opens the goal tally with great shot blasted in off the underside of the cross bar.
2-0 (8 mins): Jade Pereira dribbles skilfully around several defenders before striking a low shot inside the right post.
3-0 (17 mins): Rachel Burton slots in following a great cross from Paige Gunn.
4-0 (19 mins): Paige Gunn poaches a goal from close range.
5-0 (29 mins): Burton nets again.
6-0 (31 mins): Sophie Ellerton scores confidently from a fine Burton flick on.
7-0 (33 mins): Nailah Master nets her second from the right from a narrow angle.
7-1 (42 mins): Brave and unbowed Weddington score a well deserved goal; however unfortunately for them this merely sparks the Aces into further attacks.
8-1 (50 mins): Ellerton nets her second from a superb through-ball from Master.
9-1 (54 mins): Master completes her hat-trick.
10-1 (58 mins): Aces keeper Heidi Millin comes out to play and scores with a beautiful looping shot from the edge of the area that drops just under the cross bar.
11-1 (60 mins): Olivia Taylor drives a low, hard shot into the net from the left.
12-1 (65 mins): Master gets another to take her tally to four.
13-1 (68 mins): Ellerton completes her hat-trick.
14-1 (70 mins): Gunn gathers the keeper's miss kick and scores her second.
15-1 (73 mins): Gunns completes her hat-trick guiding the ball inside the right post.
16-1 (76 mins): Millin gets her second with a powerful shot following a goal mouth scramble for possession.
The Aces players who didn't manage to get on the scoresheet all played well.
Sarah Dannaher and Sophie Pickering proved very difficult to get past. Charlotte Broad made some fine passes and Lucy Brewer linked-up play in both defence and attack.
Even though the Aces sought to redress the clear imbalance between the teams by playing out of position and generally fielding 10 players this was not a balanced contest.
Master was the player of the match for the Aces.
