Gridiron: Leicester Falcons land first win of season
Leicester Falcons beat BAFL Division One rivals Birmingham Bulls to claim their first win of the season.
It was a memorable day for the club in more ways than one. Not only did they get off the mark at the third attempt this season but they did it at Welford Road, the home of Leicester Tigers, in a game staged as a fund-raiser to help mark the 25th anniversary of Loros.
Leicester emerged 22-15 winners. A 35-yard field goal from Andy Plant after a turnover gave them an early lead. Another fumble gave Leicester good field position later in the first quarter and they moved 10-0 ahead as running back Timi Dada swept in from 29 yards.
Falcons increased their lead in the second quarter when James Horn went in from two yards after a Bulls punt was blocked. Horn then threw to Dale Hawes, who beat two defensive backs to run in for a 60-yard score, putting Leicester 22-0 ahead. Birmingham hit back before half-time with two touchdowns to leave Falcons defending a 22-15 advantage.

Heat took its toll in the second half and the closest Falcons went to extending their lead were two failed field-goal attempts.
In the closing minutes, Birmingham threatened to claim the touchdown that could have seen them tie the game.
But they were halted on the two-yard line when Jonny Hopewell hit Bulls running back Brendan Cunnae with a crunching tackle to secure victory.
Next up for the Falcons are conference leaders Oxford Saints who visit Leicester Forest RFC on June 20.
The Longslade/John Cleveland College Wildcats were the winners of the inaugural Falcons Youth tournament which opened the day at Welford Road.
Tom Campbell was the team's outstanding player, throwing a touchdown pass and returning two interceptions for touchdowns.
