A gardening club is inviting children to enter competitions to grow the tallest sunflower and biggest pumpkin.

Ellistown Allotment and Gardens Society is calling on young growers to put forward their most impressive specimens.

A spokesman said: "The competitions have been organised to promote interest in allotment gardening and healthy eating, particularly among young people."

The closing date for entries is June 30.

The sunflower competition will be held on September 12, at Sunnyside Garden Centre, in Leicester Road, Ibstock.

The pumpkin competition will be at Ellistown Working Men's Club, on October 31.
