Health centre hope for air raid shelter site
A "much-needed" health centre could be built on the site of a former air raid shelter.
There are plans to build the centre off Victoria Park Road, Leicester, to replace the Freeman's Common Health Centre, which mainly serves students from the nearby University of Leicester.

A planning application for the building has been submitted to the city council by Assura Property.
An Assura spokesman said: "The GPs have been looking for new premises for over ten years and desperately need new purpose-built accommodation.
"They predominantly serve students at the University of Leicester but not exclusively, and are keen to expand their list size to cater for the growing needs of the local non-student population once they move into new premises.
"The present premises are in very old buildings, which is inadequate for a modern primary care service. New premises are badly needed."
The new purpose-built health centre would include a pharmacy.
Last year, a survey found that Freeman's Common Health Centre was one of 30 GP practices in the city where the buildings was not adequate for patients. A decision is due to be made on the application by the in the next few months.

“I am a student at the University of Leicester but I live in Lincolnshire.I am a full-time wheelchair user and I have found on many occasions that Freemans Common health centre is very inaccessible. As it is in an old building it was not designed for wheelchair users. I cannot get in the front door as there are steps inside. This means wheelchair users have to use a backdoor, with a doorbell (which does not work) to get attention. Inside there are no disabled toilets and the only toilets there are are down steps. The doors of the doctor's consultation rooms are too narrow for me to fit my chair through. As a result the doctor had to see me in the corridor, thankfully I did not have a personal issue at the time. If I do have a personal issue in the future, God help me. Also as I cannot get into the doctor's consultation rooms I have had to have vaccinations in a taxi in the car park before. I think you'll agree this is not the most hygienic of environments. As I will be at the University of Leicester for a further two years, I do think a new doctor's surgery is very much badly needed. The benefits of a new surgery will far outweigh the loss of a relatively small area of Victoria Park.”

“it is a health centre not a nite club...
its a small amount of land..used only daytime mon-friday!.plenty of lovely green victoria park...
oadby is where some of the halls are not all, it needs to be near present university and local practices cannot cope with a patient list size thats at present and needed...no matter where this centre is planned to be there will always be opposition. you cant please everyone, but it will happen, as its been a long time coming and even though i am local resident i have no issues at all...”

“It will change the character of the walk from Victoria Park Road through the park up to and past the university. Instead of trees there will be a modern building, presumably with car park, to the side. Users of the present health centre have told me they are happy with existing facilities. GPs in the area have open lists so there is no need for this. If it's for students it would be better near the halls of residence in Oadby so they can get to it easily if they are ill.
A new building will also change the appearance of a beautiful green space for passers by in cars or walking.”

“i cannot understand some peoples reasons for being against it...and find it unbelievable that people who will benefit from this new well needed health centre are the small minority who are against it. the area around it has many open lovely spaces and this is only a very small site, so do not beleive that it is going to have much impact on the space and area concerned.
these opposing people are using very negative reasons for there opposition to it, cant you think of the benefits its going to bring? all good things have to move on and a new health centre to replace the outdated and inadequate one now is a positive thing. i come to bet that many of these people will use the new centre when it opens. which seems to me very strange if they never wanted it in first place...”

“I am informed that this would involve the destruction of a largish area of mature trees and shrubbery, no mention of this? Therefore, for that reason alone I am against it..”
